THE ARTISAN PENGUIN IS THE HOME TO MY ARTS AND CRAFTS AND CRAZY IDEAS, INCLUDING MY BOOK REVIEWS AND RANDOM MUSINGS.
Alice in Wonderland Star Wars Mashup
I love Alice in Wonderland. I also love Star Wars (even more then I love Alice in Wonderland). What a better way to combine two of the things I love then a mashup homage to the original Star Wars poster. First I drew the picture in pencil, then outlined it in dip pen & ink. Next I painted the drawing with watercolours. Finally with white acrylic I made the stars.
Penguins on Rocks
This is my very first watercolour painting. I had a crazy idea a few months back that I wanted to try out watercolours. I purchased a small set of watercolours, and while I was on holidays from work I decided to start playing around with the paints. Slapping the paints onto the paper randomly is how the background was created. Eventually I decided to try and paint something on top. I love penguins so the resulting painting featured three little penguins balancing upon the rocks.
A Birthday Gift
My second watercolour attempt was a birthday present for a friend. I "borrowed" a picture from her facebook page that featured her husband paddling on the water outside of their home in Victoria, BC.
The day that Carrie Fisher died was a sad one for many people. When I was fourteen I was at one of the department stores downtown and there in the book section I found a book that seemed kind of interesting, and somehow sort of familiar. In my hands was the book that would change my life, Star Wars: Jedi Search. Within the first few chapters I was hooked, and Star Wars would be a part of the rest of my life. I purchased every Star Wars book I could get my hands on, bought the VHS of the movies, watching them so many times that I actually wore them out. While watching the movies, for what I thought was the first time, they seemed so familiar, like I had seen them before. Turns out that I grew up watching them as my mom would watch them on TV. I even found out that in May 1980, she went to see Empire Strikes Back in theatres while she very pregnant with me. Star Wars has been a part of my entire life. I was very saddened to hear of the passing of Carrie Fisher today. Without her, and her representation of Princess Leia in the Star Wars universe my life would be unrecognizable.
This painting of Carrie Fisher was my way to help with the loss of such an iconic person. I know that it doesn't really look like her, but I'm sure she would have enjoyed the effort non-the-less.
A Royal Racoon by any other name would not be purple. I'm still learning how to do backgrounds but I was happy with how all the "splatter" turned out.
Tiny Fences Buffy
Have you heard of Tiny Fences: A Buffy Podcast? Well if you haven't, it is this amazing podcast created by two of my friends. Amanda's watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer for the first time and Andrea's rewatching it for the umpteenth time. It is a very enjoyable podcast to listen to, even if Buffy the Vampire Slayer isn't your thing.
Soon the girls will be creating a musical episode of the podcast as a way to review the musical episode in season 6 "Once more with feeling". Talking with them about the podcast inspired me to create this painting.
As part of a monthly challenge on a watercolour facebook group I have joined, for the month of March, the challenge was "C Composition" The whole idea behind the challenge was to paint something so that you could see the letter C.
This was my attempt.
Copied from my own picture, I'm standing on Second Beach in Vancouver, BC overlooking some rock Inukshuks. In the distance is Jericho Beach in Vancouver, BC.
Happy 150th Birthday Canada
It was Canada's 150th birthday this year (2017) and I felt like painting a Canadian Flag. You can read all about it on my Random Musings blog post.
